“The reason why I am praying for the opportunity to become a Chancellor for a Day is because I would like to show my appreciation for this school, Here at FSU, I was exposed to science and research that opened my eyes to look at my future differently,” stated Harmin Herrera.
Through Harmin’s participation in FSU-RISE (Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement) program, she won second place in the poster presentation at the 2011 FSU-RISE/LSAMP Joint Research Symposium. She also presented other research projects at 2011 NC-OptEd Alliance Day in NC State University campus and at the 2011 Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS) in St. Louis, MO. Harmin believes that the sky is the limit when it comes to research and science. The highly qualified staff of research professors at FSU helped her in her scientific endeavors and broaden her horizons.
Harmin Herrera is a senior Chemistry major with a minor in Biology and expects to graduate in May 2012. After earning her degree at FSU, she plans to earn the PhD degree in Biomedical Science and has been accepted into the PhD program at Drexel University in Biomedical Science, Engineering and Health Systems.
The Chancellor for a Day program was instituted by Chancellor James A. Anderson and is designed to enable students to gain a better understanding of the day-to-day operations of the University by shadowing the Chancellor for one day. The student that is selected will participate in all of the activities and meetings scheduled for the Chancellor. The main goals of the program are to: 1.) give students an opportunity to be a part of the administrative process; 2.) emphasize the role of the student in the university; 3.) give students experience in the decision making process; and 4.) enable students to gain some understanding of the leadership skills required for managing a multifaceted organization and the synergy required for operating as a whole.
Students interested in being selected “Chancellor for a Day” must send in an email letter of application of no more than 500 words. It should include: 1.) why you want to be Chancellor for a Day; 2.) evidence of your interest in leadership from your participation in student or community organizations, or activities in the academic major; and 4.) the compelling factors about yourself which demonstrate that you are the best person to be Chancellor for a Day. Be sure to include your telephone number, home address, and email address. Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or higher.
Student applications will initially be reviewed for the Chancellor by a Selection Committee, which is comprised of members of the Student Government Association, faculty, and the Chancellor’s Office. APPLY NOW for the 2012-2013 academic year. Send applications to firstname.lastname@example.org.
